Stamp for a Cause: Parrots In Paradise Sanctuary

At Maniology, we believe nail art can be more than just beautiful designs—it can be a force for good. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce our latest Stamp for a Cause collaboration with Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary, a Hawai‘i-based nonprofit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and lifelong care of parrots.

How This Collaboration Took Flight

This special collab came to life thanks to Lauren from @zenstamping, who first introduced us to Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary and their incredible mission. Lauren has been a long-time member of our stamping community, and her passion for animals inspired us to team up and create a plate that gives back in a meaningful way.

About Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary

Parrots in Paradise provides sanctuary to parrots in need across Hawai‘i, many of whom have been abandoned, neglected, or surrendered by owners unable to care for them. With love, enrichment, and expert care, this nonprofit ensures these intelligent and colorful birds have a safe home for life. Every plate purchased helps support food, medical care, and shelter for these feathered friends.

A Conversation with Dorothy Walsh, Founder of Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary

We spoke with Dorothy Walsh, the heart behind PPS, to learn more about the sanctuary and the birds she cares for.

Q: How did Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary get its start?
A: Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary started as a result of our 9-year-old daughter (at the time) telling me we needed to start a sanctuary when she realized at this young age that many life circumstances made it difficult to care for parrots. She was absolutely right!

Q: What does a typical day at the sanctuary look like?
A: A typical day at the sanctuary starts by gathering up a huge bounty of fruits and veggies and chopping them up to begin feeding. Along with the fruits and veggies cut up, we prepare healthy nuts, seeds, and pellets, and begin the process of cleaning all the food and water dishes for the daily meals. Delivering all the food and water bowls for 125 parrots takes 3–4 hours. After feeding, tasks include cleaning aviaries, replacing broken perches, assessing social needs for each aviary, and interacting with the parrots in greatest need of attention.

Q: What are some misconceptions people often have about parrots?
A: Some of the greatest misconceptions about parrots are about understanding how long they can live, how they are prejudiced about whomever they like or dislike, that parrots can be very expensive to care for (especially with quality food), and how much socialization they require. The list is very long.

Q: Do you have a favorite parrot at the sanctuary?
A: I do not have a favorite parrot; however, my heart goes out especially to the African grey parrot since they are extremely misunderstood. Otherwise, of course, we love everyone!

Q: If your parrots could speak, what do you think they’d say?
A: If our parrots could speak, I believe that they would be expressing sincere gratitude for us rescuing them from many terrible circumstances. Others would be grateful that we intervened for them when their beloved humans passed away with no one else to take up their care and love.
