In the Spirit of Giving Back

Posted by Tiana Regan

2018 kicked off as a brainstorming year for us.  One of the main topics that we kept circling back to was “how can we impact our community?”  Giving back was always something we felt strongly about, so we knew this was the year to do it!
In our usual brainstorming fashion, we round-tabled our ideas and spouted off charities we felt strongly about: “what about the animals? We have to save the animals!” or “what about the kids in developing countries?!”
At the time, we had recently developed our core vision for the company which is:  To nurture a community of individuality where you will be inspired to artistically express yourself - and we knew we had to find an organization that aligned with our values. We quickly discovered that the YWCA Oahu was a perfect fit. They focus on empowering women through wellness programs, facilities, and economic financial services.
We hooked up with a representative that aligned us with the Ka Hale Ho‘āla Hou No Nā Wāhine program.  This program hosted by YWCA is a “community-based furlough program in our Fernhurst facility, dedicated to empowering women to successfully transition from prison back into the community. Through this program, our furlough residents set and accomplish attainable goals, build resiliency, learn to manage emotions, and make positive changes.”  In May, we finally set a date to volunteer our time and talents to show these women how to make a great first impression when going back out into the workforce. We wanted to focus on how they can express themselves through nail art as a social and creative outlet but also manicure their hands in a style that’s was work appropriate.
We got to sit down with a group of beautifully diverse females while exchanging stories, knowledge and time. We showed them techniques in nail painting while some shared their life experiences with us.  There were a lot of smiling faces in the room. It was amazing to see how something as simple as painting a nail can make someone feel confident, positive and alive.

We look forward to keeping the giving spirit alive and providing more of our time and efforts back into our local community and with your help, we can do it together!
When you subscribe to our Mani X Me Monthly Club, you’re helping support the YWCA Oahu to continue programs such as Ka Hale Ho‘āla Hou No Nā Wāhine that empower women to put forth their best - to themselves and to their community! So, keep being beautiful, and let’s stamp out inequality.
